TOUR OF MISS BATTEN
ASSOCIATION OF DEPARTMENT. CRITICISM OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) HASTINGS, This Day. Criticism of the Department of Internal Affairs in associating itself to the extent it had in the tour of Miss Jean Batten was voiced by members of the Hastings Borough Council last evening. It was made clear, however, that it was not intended to belittle Miss Batten or her performance, but j it, was the methods adopted by the. department that, evoked criticism, j A programme forwarded by the department was before the council in ; connection with Miss Batten’s visit to | Hastings. The Mayor, Mr G, A. Mad- ; dison, explained that Miss Batten j would be accompanied by two Governj input aeroplanes. Bhe was under con- : tract lo appear at certain theatres. |“ Wo can only adopt the proposals, for j I understand the department will not ' agfeo. lo any changes,” said Mr Martdison. ■ Councillors opposed the department , arranging the programme and insisting j on its adoption, one councillor characj torising it as “a piece of importin- | dice.” Another said it was a ridiculous I thing and childish. | The council formally agreed to adopt 1 thb proposals.
