All the Auckland candidates were beaten at the opening of the Egmort Racing Chib’s winter meeting yesterday, but several of them raced prominently, Brown Abbey, Princess Star, and British Columbia running second, and Solomon third. .Features of the racing wore the surprise wins of Moatoa, Illuminate and Tres Sec, who returned good dividends. Some delay occurred in the running of the programme, and the last race was started over an hour late.. There was a good attendance, the gate takings being £BO larger than on the first day last year. The totalisatnr turnover was £8,457 10/-, an increase of £2,265 10/-, the win-aud-place sys-! tom being used on each occasion. During the running of the Mcßae Handicap, Ruri veered out from the rails in the run home, and checked Chopin and Alloy. There was an inquiry into the incident, and the. explanation of Duncan, the rider of Ruri, was accepted.
