CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP

: SERVICES ARE RUNNERS-UP j _ : NOMADS CRASH BADLY. ■ ■ ii ] COMPETITION DECIDED. B ■ . I : Cool and Une weather ideal for the j pastime, favoured continuation of the I Whangarei cricket championship on ! Saturday. By defeating Nomads rath- | er hollowly, Services played them* ; selves into the position of runners-up. ! The game was anothpr individualistic ■ triumph for G. L. Weir. In the other j match at the Reclamation, Hikurangi j and School A 'both scored heavily, with •o, resultant draw'. At Maungakarai mea, Whangarei overcame the wicket, | which has beeen their bote noir for j some time, and scored heavily. The I absence of Child made a noticeable difference to the strength of the home side. HEFTY HITTING. 417 RUNS: 9 WICKETS. Some of the tallest scoring of the season was seen in the match between School firsts and Hikurangi. Right from the start it was apparent that it was Mae Na y’s day out. He belted all the bowling unmercifully, taking full advantage of the many long hops offering. Many of his eleven fours sailed over slips’ heads. Lawrie was unfortunate to, be bowled off his pads, and Te Paa followed in the next over, but that was the last real bright spot for the bowlers, who were lot down by apathetic fieldsmen, iSent- in after a declaration School proved themselves no wit behind in the run-getting game, and had time permitted would quite likely have exceeded the score for the same number of wickets. Pat Wilson only scored half a dozen, but was not dismissed until the total stood at 65. Both Teesdalo and Bay opened with three consecutive maidens. With Coote and Falvey together runs came at a rather hectic pace, neither boy being afraid to release his hitting ability. Falvey was out in attempting tb bash a full toss, which turned off his bat to point, but Coote was still going strong when failing light ended the game. Details were as follows; — HIKURANGI. WHANGAREI SCORE WELL. AGAINST MAUNGAKARAMEA. After being sent in to bat at Maungakaramea, Whangarei proceeded to compile the highest team total ever recorded in a competition match on the ground. Jennings again gave Ms side a good start, being fourth out at 107. Gash was in lively mood from the outset, and playing with great confidence collected his half-century very quickly. With the first ball sent down, Wilson skittled L. O’Carroll’s stumps. However Emmett, back in the cricket fold, did something to re-establish the family reputation. Fayne, in last, and Bint made a stand for the tenth wicket and the innings closed within two minutes of time. Scores were: — WHANGAREI. WEIR DOMINATES.

WITH BAT AND BALL. Weir completely dominated the position in the game between Combined Services and Nomads. Bowling with more speed than usual and employing a great variety in his attack, he outmanoeuvred the opposing batsmen to take 7 wickets for 27 runs in 12 overs. Particularly good balls accounted for E. Collins and Menzies. By scoring 11, Collins completed Ms 1000 runs for the season made in midweek, and Saturday competitions and representative matches. Cotterill and Jounneaux both shaped well, and when Weir changed to slows Cotterill became quite vigorous. Now that Abbott has left, N. Saul has taken on the mantle of opening batsman once more, and played* the part well in staying with Weir while 103 runs were notched for the first wicket. Weir was very restrained for the first half-hour, declining to play many balls on the off side, so that of Ms first twenty all but one were gained by leg shots. Later he peppered the boundaries in all directions, taking

three beautiful sixes off Lawrence. When in the 80’s he presented Dunn with a simple catch, which second slip failed to accept, Cotterill being the bowler. Dunn returned to the bowling crease, and the first ball went for two, the next over square leg’s head for six, but the third turned just enough to take the wicket. Weir included 8 fours and 4 sixes in 94. With an hour remaining to play,. Matthews declared, but Collins and Cotterill batted with such assurance that the effort to secure the additional point was abandoned. NOMADS. . First Innings. E.
