LATE MRS N.O. WHITE

A MEMORIAL SERVICE, A large number of people attended the morning service in St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Dargaville, yes- ; terday morning, when Rev. W. iHliott, . of AVhangarei, conducted a memorial i service to the late Mrs N. O. White. The choir rendered suitable music, and appropriate hymns were chosen. In the course of his remarks the / Rev. W. Elliott said: — “This morning the regular worshippers in this church cannot help thinks ing very much about the ‘border-line ' between this life and the life which is to come. One of your number has just crossed that border, and is with Christ, which is far better. “God touched her and she slept. Her call ivas not unexpected. • For months there had been very grave anxiety regarding her health, and now the angel has come, and she has been called to the life beyond. Her life was rich and full, and was spent in service for others. In her home she was a loyal and loving wife and mother, and a hostess who made everyone feel at home. Her family reflect much of her grace and strength of character. She was a woman of wonderful energy and noble ideals. The whole community has been the richer for the fact that she lived in your Manse for the past seven years. ■She served her Church in Guild and P.W.M.ir. and Busy Bees and Sunday School, and that with evangelical fervour. She served in a wider sphere as President of P.A., and other executive posts, and whatever she undertook she did well. On the last occasion She was in Whangarei Manse, she was planning for the creation of a wider missionary interest among the children. She served this community in her work among the Guides, and for temperance and aK sport. And now she has been called to her rest. “Servant of God, well done Rest from thy loved employ. The battle o ’cr, the victory won, Receive thy crown with joy.” Her life and the gap she leaves bring a challenge. Shall we who are left allow this work to lapse? Christ said “Ye are my friends if ye do.” Yes, that is it. “Do,” “Act.” A mere passing thought of appreciation and respect is not enough. A mere pious sentiment is not enough. The test of real friendship is action and service. Shall we allow this memorial day to pass without responding to the call and challenge that comes? Shall we not readily take tip the iasßs laid down by her whom we remember, and take her place in service? By such • action we will show 1 to all the. world that we are really and truly he? < friends and Christ’s friends, “From failing hands they flung the torch. Be ours to lift it high.”

Prom her failing hands there comes the torch in P.W.M.U. work. Is there any real friend here prepared to make the sacrifice of seizing that torch, and lifting it high in the doing elf missionary work? Are there any Teal friends-who will lift high the torch' M Sunday School, Busy Bees and 'Guild" work? That is the tost of teat ffiohd* ship: to do; to take her place apd carry on her work And now that the call has come we j fee! that we have another "link with I the life beyond, and another friend there. "Some day- or other, .1 shall: siitely come Where true hearts wait fof hie.” ‘ Our sympathy goes out, to >tr WHltd, and to all his, family. We rejoice, du their bravo spirit and strong faitn. May they have given unto tlietn guidance and strength and. Wisdohi ih tJio service for Christ, to which they haVo boon called. ’ ’
