FARMERS' UNION

RALLY AT TAURAROA.

With the idea of bringing the members of local branches of the Farmers’ Union into closer touch with each other, and with members of the executive, a combined meeting of farmers was held at the Tauraroa Public Hall last week. The meeting was arranged at the instigation of the Maungakaramea Branch of the Farmers’ Union, and neatly 100 people were present, including a fair sprinkling of ladies. The following branches were represented: Mangapai, Waikiekie-Waiotira, Maungatapere, Euakaka, Maungakaramea, and the Maungakaramea branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mr E. Woolhouse presided, and the speakers for the evening were Mr A. E. Robinson (provincial secretary and editor of “Farming First”), and Mr A. Briscoe-Moore, president of the Whangarei| sub-provincial executive: other members of the executive present were Mr W. Chetham (Euakaka), Mr C. Stevens (Maungatapere), and Mr .1. T. Stephen (Waikiekie). Mr Briscoe-Moore gave a most interesting resume of the aims and work of the Union. Its many activities were reviewed on the lines of his report presented at the annual meeting of the executive. Mr Robinson’s address dealt mainly with the question of monetary reform, and after referring to the fact that the depression and its effects had] been foretold three or four years ago by the members of the Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Union Executive, the speaker went on to explain the proposals of Major Douglas. At the conclusion of the address, various questions were answered, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speakers. Supper provided by the ladies w r as handed round.
