A MIDNIGHT CIRCUS
WHANGAREI INCIDENT
The coming of Wirth’s Circus to Whangarci to-morrow ami on Saturday led an old resident to relate an interesting story this morning. It was recalled that Fitzgerald’s Circus was due to play in Whangarci about thirtysix nr more years ago. The circus had (o come by sea from Auckland, but, owing to rough weather, instead of arriving in the morning as expected, it did not reach the ground until midnight. A large number of people had come into the town by special trains and by vehicles of all kinds, and they wore loth lo go away without having the treat they had looked forward to. Consequently, the circus men got to work with a will, the sides of tjie tent were erected, and the performance began about 2 a.m,, a large audience holing present. The performance lasted I over two hours, and it was not until o a.m. that the special train left for the North carrying the tired but happy patrons. The circus gave a matinee next afternoon and a performance in | the evening, afterwards going on to j Kawakarva. Thus three performances were given within 24 hours.
