He is permanently disfigured, having lost both his ears. In the course of his evidence lacoui said he had received several letters, signed “Black Hand,” in which money Avas demanded from him. The demands Avere accompanied by menaces of violence if they were not complied Avith. He produced the letters, in Avhich some of his friends Avorc threatened Avith the loss of their sugarcane crops by fire if ho failed to influence them to send money by a messenger especially nominated.
