MANY APPEALS

AGAINST CLASSIFICATION FOR RACING.

HIKURANGI SWAMP AREA

HEARING COMMENCES TODAY.

The hearing of over 100 appeals against classification of land in the Hikurangi Swamp drainage area for the purpose of rating, were commenced at a special sitting of the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court this morning, Mr G. N. Morris, S.M., is presiding.

The Magistrate at the outset stated that the appeals had been drafted into nine groups, and it was proposed to hear three today, two tomorrow and four -on Friday. The appeals had been grouped as follows:

' Before the , hearing commenced, one of the classifiers, Hr A. C, Sutherland, of Whakatane, made a- statement, at the request of several counsel, on the principles involved in, making classifications. In arriving at classifications, all land classed A was that which had received direct benefit from the works, that classed B was land that had received less, direct benefit, C that that had recsved indirect benefit, and D land that was not rateable. Mangahahuru Group. in the first group were then dealt with. In the case of N. X. Moore, the Magistrate decided that the classification should stand. The appeals of J. M'. McKenzie, G. M. Davidson and A. J. O’Neil were struck out, owing to the non-appear-ance of the appellants. (Proceeding.)
