AS OTHERS SEE US

We print, in another part of today’s “Advocate” an article in which an old settlor of Whangarei sets , down her impressions of Northland on revisiting the territory after thirty-three years’ absence in. Britain. The, lady, who is a well known contributor to the English press, is fully qualified to voice opinions which command respect. Prior to her marriage, Mrs Campbell was Miss Jessie Weston. her father being one of the pioneer settlers in the district and owning the property at Wesi ton’s Point, on the Whangarei Harbour. She returned to New Zealand a few weeks ago and is spending some months in her mother country. It is very gratifying to hear that Mrs Campbell is most agreeably surprised at the changes which have taken place in Whangarei since she last saw it. That there should be marked growth is not a matter for wonder, but it is reassuring, in view of the high hopes for the future held by citizens, to know that development is taking place along right lines—that the commercial and aesthetic possibilities of the town have been adequately recognised by its builders. It is also distinctly; cheering to learn that Mrs Campbell is delighted with the scenic wonders of Northland. Her opinion that the North will be the Mecca of tourists is of real value, for she is a world-travel-ler possessed of discernment and critical faculty. We arc particularly glad to be able to print Mrs Campbell’s opinions, which bear out what we have so fro-1 quently urged: that, apart altogether from its value agriculturally, pastorally and industrially, Northland has no superior in the world of scenic beauty and historic and legendary interest. When these facts are known as widely as they should be, Northland will, indeed become the Mecca of the tourist —and the tourist, it must not he forgotten, is the forerunner of the settle] 1 .
