YELLOW RIVER OVERFLOW
COVERS 2000 SQUARE MILES AFFECTING 1,500,000 PEOPLE EVACUATION OF TOWNS (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received 10 a.m.) PEKING, August 17. ' “China’s Sorrow,” the Yellow River, has flooded over 2000 square miles of the province of Shantung. A foreign expert, returning here from the scene of the disaster, reports that 1,500,000 people are, affected, but the loss of life is small,' owing to ample warning. Several towns have been completely evacuated by the populace, while at others, residents, including prisoners in gaols, have taken refuge behind mediaeval walls. Everywhere the dykes are being feverishly strengthened. The gates of some cities have been barricaded with sand bags. The river is now falling.
