TREATY WITH CANADA

NEW ZEALAND INTERESTS. FURTHER EXTENSION SOUGHT. CONFERENCE PENDING. (Received 9 a.in.) NEW YORK, August 13. Mr G. W. Forbes, Prime Minister of New Zealand, and the other members of the party will spend a few days in New York and on Tuesday will visit Washington, where the members will be the guests of President Roosevelt. Mr Forbes says he thinks the nations at the World Conference at least passed sie discussion period and now are ready to get down to details. He doubts if, a New Zealand delegation will attend the next session of the conference, owing to the distance they would have to travel. The Dominion’s primary interest now is in higher commodity prices, Mr Forbes today, began to make preparations for a conference here with the Canadian Minister of Trade and Commerce, Mr IT. H. Stevens, Concerning the' trade treaty between the two countries. Canada is understood to be pressing for a further extension of the treaty, which will expire on November 24. Mr Forbes says he cannot accept the invitation of the Canadian Government to visit Ottawa. Mr Forbes, before leaving en route for Washington, said that New Zealand wished to replace the present temporary trade agreement with a long-term pact, in an effort to increase trade between the two countries. He conferred with Mr H. H. Stevens, Canadian Minister of Trade and Commerce, but no announcement was made.
