RELIEF OF DISTRESS

The hi embers of the Ladies ’ Gardening Chib are to be congratulated upon the success which attended their effort to provide relief for those in distress as a result of unemployment in Whangarei. They organised a special sale of cuttings, seedlings, flowers, produce and other things on Monday, and. as a result, were able to hand ,C 7 to the ladies in charge of Urn local relief committee yesterday morning. Portion of this money was immediately used in the purchase of garments required by mothers with babies, while other amounts procured much needed foodstuffs for infants and young children. The money came as a godsend to the ladies, who, as a consequence of their experiences at the relief depot, are brought into intimate touch with the distress of mind and body suffered by so many in the community. The ladies, owing to paucity of funds, are unable to grant, all the assistance they realise is absolutely essential, and, as a consequence, every donation which reaches them is greatly appreciated. The Ladies’ Gardening Club lias exemplified the truth of the proverb that he who gives quickly gives twice.
