MINING NEWS. OKARITO WASH-UP. The Okarito Fiv6-Mile Beach Golddredging Company, Ltd., which is operating in South Westland, reports a wash-up of 70 ounces 18 pennyweights for 120 hours’ dredging, MAHAKIPAWA YIELD. A trial wash-up at the Central Shotover Claim (Otago) yielded 21 ounces from top material. GOLDEN SANDS REPORT. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Golden Sands Company (Barrytown, Greymouth), reports a return of 40 ounces 2 pennyweights for 35 shifts.

REOPENING OF MINE. A party has been busy in reopening the Keep-it-Dark quartz mine at Reefton, which returned good dividends some years ago. Golden Ledge tunnel has been reopened for C6O feet, 'and from the crosscut the intermediate level was reached. A nice sample of stone was taken out. The reef in this level has about 250 feet of backs. As this block of stone in the Golden Ledge is in virgin country. It should open up a new mine altogether. It is understood that the oAvners' purpose is to erect a small battery and work the area themselves.

KAPOWAI AMALGAMATED.

At a meeting of shareholders in the Kapowai Amalgamated Gold-mining Company, Ltd., held, at Auckland on Saturday, a scheme was adopted which will enable the company to erect and equip a small battery, now idle on its property, in the Mercury Bay district. The battery should be in operation within two months, and will give employment to several men. PRICE OF SILVER. NO ALTERATION. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, July 15. Silver is quoted today at 18 11-16 d an ounce spot, and 1813-16 d forward the same as yesterday. ZEALANDIA PACKING COMPANY. FACTORY AT WHANGAEOA. The Zealandia Packing Co., Ltd., advises that it has completed at Whangaroa the first unit of its factory for the freezing, bottling and canning of fish for the New Zealand and export markets. The factory is well situated, from both the eoramerciaj and the hygienic point of view, and modern machinery has been installed. Production on a commercial scale has commenced.

The best quality of locally-grown onions are now commanding from 7/6 to 8/ per cwt, f.0.r., with the market very quiet. Cauliflowers, as the result of recent supplies are now more plentiful. They warm rains, have come on well, and supplies arc now more plentiful. They are offering at 7/ to 7/6 a largo sack. Drumhead cabbages are firm, at 6/ a large sack; pumpkins, 4/ per cwt; carrots and parsnips, 3/ a sugarbag; Jerusalem seed artichokes, 6/6 per cwt. VEGETABLES FOR AMERICA. EXPORT UNDER PERMIT. ister of Agriculture, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, 'last night. “As the case of fruit,” added the Minister, “permits are granted in the United States to the importer. The present import duty is 2$ cents per lb.”
