CREAM COLLECTION. COUNCIL URGES CONTROL. The Whangarei representative to the New Zealand Counties’ Conference will support strongly a remit advocating the control of cream collection with a view to preventing overlapping. The matter was raised at the council meeting yesterday by Cr. Blake, who cited some glaring instances of whac he described as unnecessary duplication in the use of the roads. For instance, he said, the Northern Wairoa Company ran its lorry across the Houtu and down the Wharekohe Road, while the Maungatapere Company collected up the Houtu. Cr. Blake thought overlapping in cream collection was a more important matter than most of the subjects with which the Transport Board was dealing today. The chairman considered that..unless the companies agreed to check this trouble themselves, the Transport Board should step in. Cr, Elliott, too, considered intervention by the Transport Board would be well justified. In some districts cream was carted and then railed for miles, while a factory was near at hand. Cr. Hayward agreed that the chairman should ventilate the matter at Wellington. The Farmers’ Union had asked for legislation to stop this unnecessary traffic, and their representations should be backed up. Hitherto the efforts of the dairy companies had come to nought. Gr, Clarke did not subscribe to the last statement. In the Whangarei county the evil had been combated to a great extent by private agreement between the companies. Although in individual cases overlapping had been controlled, Cr. Hayward held that the principle had not been altered after ten years’ deliberation by the North Auckland Dairy Conference. The council expressed its opinion by resolution that overlapping in cream collection should be dealt with, either by the Transport Board or some other authority. 7
