OTAIKA

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Gymnasium Club Dance. A sports benefit dance held in aid of the funds of the gymnasium club took place at the local hall, recently. The attendance was good. Mr E. Yyle performed the duties of M.C. Fine orchestral music was supplied, while much appreciated extras were played by Mrs Lord. A delicious supper was provided and dispensed by the girls of the club. Basketball Dance. A large crowd of dancers attended the dance given by- members of the local basketball team in the hall last Friday evening. Excellent orchestral music was provided. The extras were played by Mr E. Smart. Messrs E, Vyle and T. Donaldson performed the duties of M, C. in a joint capacity. The hgll was decorated in the club colours, green and black, while the club’s mascot, the black elephant, Jamuna —made by one of the players —hung in front of the platform. An ample supper was provided by the basketball girls. A most satisfactory sum in aid of the club funds resulted from the dance. New Basketball Ground. It was decided to move the basketball poles, and mark ouf fresh lines on a more level surface. This new ground is proving very satisfactory. Surprise Party, A/delightful party, which was a complete surprise, was given to Mr and Mrs Gash and family at their home on Tuesday evening by the members and friends of the Otaika Biblo Class, of which Mr Gash is leader. An enjoyable time was spent by all in competitions and playing games. The excellent programme was in the capable hands of Mr W. Kerr. Elocutionary items were presented by Mr P. Marsh, while songs were rendered by Mr Gash, who sang “Love’s Old Sweet Song,” and by Mr W. Forth, who sang “The Holy City.” A dainty supper was provided and served by the visitors. Social intercourse and the singing of several choruses followed, and the party came to a conclusion shortly before midnight.

Tennis. Although the tennis season does not officially open until September, several members of the local tennis club have enjoyed quite a number of sets on Saturday afternoons. The' court has been in excellent condition, and the weather all that could be desired, so that tennis proves to be quite as de-
