KENSINGTON BOWLERS

CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING. PAST SEASON’S ACTIVITIES. The annual meeting of the Kensington Bowling Club was held last night, there being a moderate attendance. The retiring president, Mr T. 11. Steadman, presented his annual report as follows: —

“In presenting my report on the activities of the club for the past season, I propose first to deal with the financial side. The balance sheet shows that, notwithstanding the strenuous time in which we are living, the season has been a financial success. We have made a profit on the year’s working to the extent of £20 # 1(5/4. This was made possible toy the successful tournament held at the-New Year. The prospects for the next annual tournament seem to be good and if work i-, started on the. organisation early the 1934 tournament should be a greater success.

“Another factor that has been to a very large extent a contributor to the success of the season has been the careful management and ungrudging service of the committee and others in the work of the club, and donations in money and kind towards several unfor seen expenses which will not be recur ring for some time, “The club competitions wore well supported, also the half-day tournaments. The success of our challenge teams was not so marked as in other years. The club’s team won the Swann Cup from Whangarei, but lost it to Portland in a very short time. The' value of these trophies is and should be in the opportunity which they afford for interclub play, and the winning or losing thereof is only a secondary consideration. Wo played Whangaroi for the' Harvey and Swann cups, Hiknrangi for the Hayes Cup, amjj a team competed for the Champion P-an ner. We were not represented in the Champion of Champions, as our champion was not available on the day appointed for the contest, “The champion singles was won by Mr C. Y. Stringer, the handicap pairs by Mr Kelly and Mr McMath (s), and the handicap singles by Mr Johnson. The Easter Saturday tournament was wow by Messrs McGregor and McKay, the Easter Monday tournament by Messrs Baker and! Stringer, the small Thursday afternoon tournament by Messrs Jdhnson and Stringer, and the final Thursday - tournament by Messrs Wakefield and McKay. *‘ I have now to refer to a matter to which I must draw the members’ attention, and that is the amount of unpaid subscriptions. The amount stated in the. balance sheet is the amount the committee consider should be recoverable, but it docs not represent the full amount, as there has been a considerable writing-off for rnepibcrs who were proposed and-aecoptod and who for one reason or another did not play, or, who claimed that they had signified their intention of resigning before incurring the liability for the succeeding season. Strictly speaking, in accordance with the rules they were liable, but the committee considered it would not bo hi the interests of the club that the pay-

ment should be enforced. The amount 'placed in the balance sheet is due by members who played the whole season and are in default. As we are workingon an overdraft, this means a further loss to the club in payment of interest. “The prospects of next season seem to be good. We have several proposals tor new members. The green has been top-dressed and is looking in far better condition than in any previous year at this time.

“Finally, I wish to thank the committee for their loyal work and support, those who gave voluntary labour and donations, materially benefiting the club; “During the year the club suffered a groat loss in that Mr Sword, who had acted for many years as secretary and treasurer, had to give up owing to his health. He has had a very long and serious illness, but by last reports he is on the way to a better state of health. In recognition of his services, it was thought fit that he should be made a life member of the club.” The report, together with the balance sheet, was unanimously adopted. Trophies were presented to Mr C. V. Stringer, winner of the champion singles, Messrs McKay and McGregor (Easter Saturday tournament), Messrs Stringer and Baker (Easter Monday tournament), Messrs McMath and Kelly (handicap pairs), Mr J. Johnson (handicap singles), Messrs Stringer and Johnson (Thursday afternoon tournament), and Messrs Wakefield and McKav (final tournament).

A suggestion by Mr Jones that the club fours be carried on throughout the season was left to the Match Committee to attend to. ) It was decided to play sealed handi:cap pairs, championship singles and handicap singles during the season. In the latter ease, the competition will be open to those not entering for the championship singles and will bo on the scaled handicap system. .
