CHALLENGERS FOR SHIELD. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. An application from Nelson for a tour this season of the Seddon Shield area by a Maori All Black Team was considered by the management of the New Zealand Rugby Union last night. On the motion of the chairman, Mr S. S. Dean, it was decided with regret that the committee was unable to entertain the idea. “We might consider it next season,” said Mr Dean. The Canterbury Union advised tint it had declined challenges for the Ranfurly Shield from Wellington and Waikato. Regarding the question of special challenges, the union stated it was ot opinion that, of the challenges accepted-, the only one which could possibly be considered a “special” challenge was that from the King Country. The union asked for a ruling. Mr Dean said he did not think the New Zealand Union should commit itself at the moment. “If we give a decision without being in possession of the full facts wo might be open to criticism later,” ho said. “What they want us to say is that the King Conntrv challenge is the only ‘special’ challenge, but we do not know. T suggest we ask Canterbury to [dace before ns the terms under which the matches are being played,” This was agreed to.
