TRAIN DELAYED
TABLET TN FURNACE,
THROWN IN WITH COAL,
CPer Press Association.—cnoyrlgtfit.l NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day
i An unusual incident delayed the mail train at Lepperton, 10 miles from New Plymouth, when en route to New Plymouth from Wellington. Just as the fireman was about to throw a shovel of coal into the furnace of the locomotive the driver dropped the tablet. It fell on to the coal and, before the fireman could stop, the tablet had travelled with the coal into the flames. Although it was recovered immediately, it was burned beyond recognition. On a busy section the action ■vyould have entailed considerable delay and necessitated the provision of a pilot train before the express could proceed, as the tablet system to ensure, complete safety is a rigid one. However, after telephonic communication had been established with New Plymouth and information obtained that the lino was clear, official permission was given for the train to proceed, and New Plymouth was reached onlv a few minutes late.
