MONETARY RESTRICTION

CANADIAN MEASURE

EARLY INTRODUCTION,

(Received 0 a.m.) OTTAWA, May 2,

In the- course of a speech on gorg oral financial matters, the Prime Minister, Air R. R. Bennett, said a measure w’as to be introduced shortly restrict: ing money. Tins was not to be taken as an'indication that the Government contemplated any departure from the principle of sound money. The exact nature of the proposed legislation was not announced.

On the question of the inflation or devaluation of the dollar, however, it has been stated in reliable quarters that, should this be desirable and possible of accomplishment under circumstances that would not impair the credit of Canada abroad, the Prime Minister would not hesitate to ask for the necessary authority from Parliament. It largely depends upon the action Air Roosevelt takes under the powers granted to him.
