ESCAPED CONVICTS

SEARCH IN POVERTY BAY. HOUSES RAIDED. (Per Press Association. — Copyrieht.J GISBORNE, This Day. Several reports from various localities have been received regarding the escaped convicts, Norman Alfred O’Meara and Wilkin Rainsdon Avery. Evidences of their progress have been found in several instances. On Sunday it was reported that the house of a roadman on the Waioeka Road had been broken into and food taken. The next report was that another cottage, also on the Waioeka Road, near Mr. Tvafford’s homestead, had been entered and blankets and provisions taken. At 10.30 a.m. yesterday the police received a report from Mr. J. Devonport, a dairyman living on the Gisborne side of Matawai, to the effect that a two-roomed whare had been extensively damaged during the absence of the owner.

The police search is being vigorously maintained in this area, men working both from Gisborne and Opotiki. RETAKEN IN WAIOEKA VALLEY. (Per Press Association.—cauyrleht.l GISBORNE, This Bay. O’Meara and Wilkin Rainsdon Avery, who escaped on Saturday morning from the Gisborne gaol.

The search had been intensified since Saturday night, w’hen reports of, raids on roadmen’s huts along the Waioeka Road gave a definite indication of ,the route taken by the escapees. The road crosses deep mountain streams at intervals, and the escapees were considered to have a poor chance of breaking through the police cordon. After the capture the police party set out for Gisborhc.
