THE SOCIAL WORLD . WEDDING DANCE. LARGE THRONG ASSEMBLES. ■ Alter the wedding' of Aliss Nellie Purdy and Air W. Meadwws, over HOO fripnds and relatives assembled in the Criterion Theatre on Friday evening, where a monster dance had been arranged. The function proved to be one of the largest and most enjoyable yet held in Hikurangi. Alusic, was supplied by a. Whangarei orchestra, with extras by Aliss D. Teesdale and Air N. Saul. As ALC., Air H. Coles was most efficient.

At a suitable interval, Air W. Meadows thanked all for their attendance, which he said was keenly appreciated. iA number of novelty pianoforte turns by Air 11. Meadows greatly delighted the audience. A Alonte Carlo waltz competition was won by Aliss P. Meadows and Air A. Alever, while two statue one-steps were triumphs for Aliss N. Edwards and Air H. Aleadows and Air .1. Crackctt and partner. A feature of the evening was the excellent supper, the preparation of which was in the capable hands of Whangarei caterers. OLYMPIA DANCE CLUB. WEEKLY FUNCTION. A BRIGHT SUCCESS. In the Parish Hall on Saturday night, the Olympia Dance Club held another of its weekly scries of functions. Quite a large crowd rolled up and a good evening’s entertainment was enjoyed. Excellent music was supplied by Air J. W, Alee, Air N. .Saul contributing a well-encored extra.

Alessrs J. Brackett and F. Viscovitch officiated as Al’s.C. Airs Keatinge and Air T. Holloway were the winners of a Alonte Carlo oue-step. WHIST DRIVE. ANGLICAN GUILD AEGIS. Alombcrs of the Anglican Ladies’ Guild held a most enjoyable whist drive in the Parish Hall on Tuesday night, eight tables of players participating.

Airs Sissons was the winner of the ladies’ prize, while the men’s award was annexed by Airs Smith. The consolation trophies fell to the lot of Airs Little senior, and Air Sissons. A dainty supper was partaken of.

On future .occasions these weekly affairs are to take place on Afonday evenings, the last having, been postponed for one night owing to the wedding dance.

SMOKE CONCERT. AIR. W. MEADOWS ENTERTAINS. On the eve of his wedding, Air. W. Aleadows tendered a smoke concert to about 40 friends in Purdy’s Hall on Saturday evening. Air. E. J. At Hie conclusion of the installation ceremony visiting brothers from Star of Whangarei, together with Hikurangi brethren, sat down to a splendid supper and a social evening passed all too quickly with ping-pong and cards. After all ending Ids brother’s wedding on 'Monday, Air IT. Aleadows left for his home in Hnntly on Wednesday. Air G. Windris, of Otonga, Spent Easter with relatives in Auckland. Air and Airs AY. 0. Harris are visiting their daughter Olive in Coromandel. They are accompanied by Aliss L, Harris. Mrs S. Pearson returned on Tuesday after Visiting relatives in Auckland.

Ernest and Airs Johnstone, all of bluntly, were guests at the wedding on Alonday. , After participating in the Easter howling tourney in Auckland, Air E. Taylor, accompanied by his wife and child, returned home on Tuesday. Aliss Bernice Doel, of Tikipunga, was the guest of Aliss Alolly Alitchell over Easter.

Aliss Alary Garvie left by Wednesday’s express for a short holiday in Rotorua, and Auckland.

Air 8. Hayward, of View Road, was in Auckland over the week-end.

Aliss N. Smith is spending her holidays with her parents in View Road. Alessrs Vincent and George Aspoy, of Auckland, were the guests of Airs W. Graham, of Wilsonville, over the Easter vacation. The former is a. wellknown violinist of IYA fame. Mr and Airs Stockley, Jnn., returned on Sunday after spending their annual vacation in Auckland.

Aliss B. Cunnold put in the Easter holidays with her parents in East Tamaki. Aliss Bemadcni was home over Easter. On Friday, her mother passed away, after a long illness.

Air F. Fowler was in Russell over the week-end.

PREPARATIONS FOR SEASON. WHAKA-AVARO LEAGUE CLUB. ANNUAL, GENERAL MEETING. If the attendance at its annual general meeting, held pn the Hotel Park dressing shed over the week-end, were any criterion, the Whaka-Waro Rugby League Football Club is to enjoy ’ a most successful season. The president, Air R. Ateyer, presided over an assembly of more than twenty members and players.

The president’s review of the past season’s operations and the financial statement, disclosing a small credit •balance were unanimously adopted.

The following officers were elected for the ensuing year.—

A proposal to revert to the club's former colours, blue and black, was generally favoured. YOUNG BIRD DERBY. E. GTLBEY THE WINNER. The Hikurangi Homing Pigeon Chib hold its Young Bird Derby on Satur day, one bird from each loft participating. The race was from Tanmarunui, an airline distance of 233 miles ">l9 yards. Fine, but cloudy, weather was experienced in the early stages, but nearer home a strong shoulder wind militated against fast times. Air E. Gilbey’s Aliss Kelly was the successful bird the owner gaining a handsome china set donated by Mr F; E. Wilson.

The competitors were released at 7.4 a.m’. and the first arrival was reported at 2.3 p.m,, the throe fastest times being ns follows. —E. Gilbey’s Aliss Kelly, 9Sl.fi yards per minute, 1; J. Under most favourable conditions, the competitors were released at 1.32 p.m. and the first home reported at 2.16 p.m. having occupied 44 minutes on the journey.

E. Hazell’s Good Parson, No. 81, was the winner, with R. Longlands AVhitc Eyes, No. 4538, second. Tomorrow’s event, confined to young birds nominated since birth, is from National Park, an airline distance of 254 miles 392 yards. The winning owner gains all the nomination money.
