WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY.

To the Editor. Sir. —Will you he kind enougl to permit me to use portion of yom valuable spare in an effort to open ur the important question of the statutory half-holiday (Thursday) as observed ir Whaugarei at present. For as long as I can remember, all sections of tin business community have had to suiVei the inconvenience of one section, tie shops and offices observing Thursday and the other, the industrial section observing Saturday. To me the post tion as it stands presents a farcicn' state of affairs. Although we have lived in contentment for so many years under the present system, I have evcr.v reason to believe that it is 31 ot altogether the wish of the majority of the citizens to remain in the same old groove. With the marked changes in conditions, and the rapid trend towards modern ideals and progressiveness, it is high time that our growing town of 7000 odd of a population should strive to keep abreast of the times with the rest of Xew Zealand’s chief toAvns in the matter of adopting the Saturday half-holiday, which lias proved from every standpoint to be the most convenient and the most, economical. The public, would soon adapt, themselves to the change, and business houses would not be making any sacrifice. -Sports bodies in particular would welcome the change, and it is a recognised fact that many previous adherents of the Thursday observance would gladly support any .spirited movement, instituted to advance the claim that Saturday would bo best suited. I am not going to take up your time and space, Mr Editor, in putting i'orwarl any arguments in favour of the Saturday observance, but would like to have expressions of opinions from others abler than myself on this important subject.—l am, etc., PROGRESSIVE.
