WHANGAREI ELECTIONS

It has been truly said that it is times of trouble and difficulty which call for the best men to j offer their services to the public. When everything is running smoothly, when there is plenty of money, and when need for! care is not perhaps urgent, the j personnel of a local body may | not be a matter of great moment, I comparatively speaking. When. | however, circumstances are not j auspicious and State and in-1 dividual alike require to exer-! cise caution in all their actions, it is important that the utmost care should be used in the selection of those in whose hands the public weal is placed. Just now, the burgesses of Whangarei should be evincing the keenest interest in-the municipal elections to be held next month. Nominations for Mayoralty and for seats on the Borough Council. Harbour Board and Hospital Board close tomorrow. It therefore behoves all who may not have given, the matter serious consideration to do so. This applies alike to those who feel they possess the qualifications necessary for local body service and to those who should use their influence to induce candidates to come forward. The task to which the Mayor, the borough councillors and the members of the Harbour Board and Hospital Board will be called during the forthcoming term of office is one which will demand sound judgment and capacity. It will be mo easy task, but the undertaking of it should be regarded as a privilege. We hope that the test of citizenship will . be met, and that when nominations close tomorrow the burgesses may have a worthy list of candidates from which to make choice.
