The magnificent piece of kauri forest. which is fringed by the OkaihauKacb highway near the junction of the Pungaere and Waiari roads, and which has trees equal to anything in the Waipoua Forest, is being sought by the Whangaroa County Council as a scenic reserve for all time.
While the Minister of Lands, the ; Hon. E. A. Hansom, and the Minister of Education, the Hon. E. .Masters, < were on their way north yesterday, they saw the trees. It was later explained to them by Mr W. H. Lane, . the county chairman, that the trees had been regarded as a future reserve, nut that it had not been expected they would be in danger for some years. It , has now been learned that the land ' had boon individualised and that a ■ native owner had taken possession and was preparing to mill the timber. It . had been suggested to him that he should exchange the trees; and tho land on which they wore standing, for timber of equivalent value growing oh Crown land in a nearby part of the district. . <v
hen Mv Ransom discussed the matter with .the owner and promised that : the State would give him a fair deal, the owner adapted a reasonable attitude, and arrangements were made for. the Minister to view the timber offer- : cd, before further discussion.
