MAN AND BEAST

A DESPERATE STRUGGLE. WOUNDED DEER ATTACKS. STALKER USES KNIFE. (Special to “Northern Advocate.") HAMILTON, This Day. To be attacked by a wounded deer was an experience met by Mr J. Humphreys, of Gordonton, while hunting Japanese deer in the Kaimanawa ranges.

He was stalking a Japanese buck, the only part of the deer’s body he could shoot at being the top of the shoulder. He fired and the animal dropped, and Mr Humphreys thought he had killed it. The deer had been only temporarily paralysed, however, for when Mr Humphreys reached it the animal attacked him.

Mr Humphreys grasped the deer’s antlers, and a struggle followed, during which Mr Humphreys managed to press the deer’s head down and force the antlers into the ground. While he was reaching for his knife, however, the animal forced its head up. A severe gash across the palm of the right hand was received by Mr Humphreys, before he got the deer in a position to kill it with his knife.
