NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED

The new president of the New Zealand Labour Party is Air iTLangstone, ALP. for Waimarino, who was yesterday elected to that position in succession to Air W, .1. Jordan, ALP. for Alannkam Air C. L. Carr, ALP. for Timaru, was elected vice-president. The Government’s policy of raising the school age was keenly discussed at yesterday’s session of the conference. It was unanimously decided to reaffirm the party’s objection to the raising of the school age from five to six, on the grounds that this action on the part of the Coalition Government was inimical to the best interests of children, parents and teachers alike, and increased the difficulties of school committees. A proposal that a State Bank function should be to bring about a progressive reduction in interest was referred to the committee appointed to revise the party’s policy.

State Advances. A similar course was taken with a proposal to extend the functions of the (State Advances Office to include the provision of all credit necessary for the establishment of secondary industries natural to and in the interests of the Dominion as a whole. The payment of sustenance to unemployed women and of pensions to widows unable to earn their living, irrespective of whether they or did not have means of livelihood, was favoured and a resolution passed to that effect. A plan that family allowances for relief workers should be extended to cover all children was also supported. The establishment of an appeal boaiffi for mental hospitals was favoured and a remit was agreed to, and the amending of the electoral law to place Maori elections on the same basis as European by providing electoral rolls and voting by secret ballot, was supported.
