UNIVERSAL SLUMP
BRITAIN LEAST AFFECTED
SELF-EFFORT AND SACRIFICE
(Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, December 19,
The Minister of Labour, Sir Henry .Betterton, presenting the Supplementary Estimates, which total £18,000,000, said the money was needed mostly for payments to the unemployed.
He said that though the deterioration of world conditions continued, Britain, as a result of her own efforts and sacrifices, had undeniably escaped its worst effects.
Britain's exports for the last 11 months had only declined G. 9 per cent, as compared with a drop for the United States of 35.7, for Germany 41,1, for Prance 37.3, and for Italy 33.3 per cent. Thus, while Britain was holding her own, there was a serious progressive deterioration in every other country, except the Dominions.
