IRISH LAND ACT

DE VALERA’S INTENTION ANNUITIES APPROPRIATION. DEADLOCK PORTENDED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received 0 a.m.) LONDON, November 5. The introduction in the Dail of a bill to amend the Irish Land Act is interpreted as meaning that Air do Valera shortly will appropriate the land annuities in order to finance agricultural schemes. The motion of the Leader of the Opposition, Air W. T. Cosgrave, to grant the farmers a two years’ moratorium on laud annuities may embarrass the Government, especially as the farmers are urging that if Air de Valera is not paying Britain there is no need for them to pay him. ‘ Tho imminence of the Redistribution of Seats Bill is regarded as a portent of a general election in the near future. Four by-elections are pending, and it is predicted that de \ alera will lose three of tho seats.

COSGRAVE FLEETING. UNRULY MOB QUELLED. (Received ,10.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 6. Special precautions -were taken to prevent disorder at a meeting attended by Mr W. T. Cosgrave at Cork. The police formed a bodyguard. As he was. entering the hall a woman evaded the cordon and rushed forward, shaking her list at Mr Cosgrav'e and shouting ‘ 1 Murderer! ’ ’ Later 100 men, armed with sticks and stones, charged the hall. The police, drawing their batons, countercharged and captured most of the weapons from the attackers. They made two arrests. Subsequently some women attempted to rush the building. . Meanwhile the White Army was protecting the entrances to the hall and ejected one interrupter. Mr Cosgrave declared that Mr de Valera’s ridiculous claims had held the country up to derision, and had resulted in international dishonour. Mr Hogan, ex-Minister of Agriculture, declared that Mr de A r alera’s demand of £400,000,000 would be justifiable only if the Free State Army was camped in Trafalgar Square, or the Navy was bombarding London Bridge.
