CUP AND STEWARDS. RACES DESCRIBED. RECORD BY FAST PASSAGE. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Shatter Avas always favourite for the Cnp, and he carried £1,308 10/-. Fast Passage, £1,026 10/-, am] Korokio, £Bl3 10/-, were the next host supported. From a good start, Jaloux was Hie first leader, but Avhen passing the judge’s box the first time, Chopin had charge from Korokio, Jaloux, Red Racer, Gay Crest, Fast Passage, Mi nerval ami Concentrate. The last three were Shatter, Historic and Arikira. When near Cutis’, Korokio headed Chopin, and as they entered Hie back streteh, Red Rarer was next, followed by Jaloux, Gay Crest, Past Passage, Palm, Minerval, Historic, Concentrate, Spearfnl and Shatter. At seven furlongs, Korokio was seven or eight lengths clear of Chopin, who headed her pursuers from that point. However, Irer opponents, pared by Jaloux and Chopin, gradually reduced the gap. As they came round the

home turn, Korokio was about three

lengths iu front of Jaloux and Chopin, with Fast Passage, Historic and Minorval on the outside, all handy. Korokio was first into the straight, lint below the distance, Fast Passage shot to the front drew right away from her rival and won by six lengths from Minerva 1. who was half a length in front of Concentrate. Jaloux was a j good fourth and then came Historic, Palm, Spoarful, Shatter, Chopin, Korokin, Red Racer, Flower, Gay Crcsl, with Arikira last —the position lie held throughout the race. The time, 3.23 1-5, was a record for the race. Shatter, the favourite, ran a most disappointing race. Fast Passage is the first winner of the Winter Cup and New Zealalid Cup. Trained in the same stable, Chnkohore Lodge, site is a four-year-old sister to Waterline, who once bent Phar T.ap in a weight-for-ngc at Flemington. The Clifford colours are always popular, and Fast Passage and her rider were given a great reception Cadland’s Fine Finish. There was a long delay at the warrier in the Stewards’. Grecian Prince and Autopay, who were both troublesome, wore planed outside the hurdle, but they were two of the smartest away. After they had gone a little way the most prominent were Fair | Weather, Royal Sceptre, Autopay and Full Crop. Entering the course proper Autopay led from Royal Sceptre, Full j Crop, The- Quorn, Grecian Prince, Silver Ring and Cndlaud. Autopay was still in charge at the half distance, but Cndlaud put in a groat finishing run ] and won brilliantly by a length. Merry I Pool was a neck away third, a. head in front of Arrow Lad. Then came Silver Ring, Normandy, The Quorn, Mount Boa and Groat Star. Cndlaud was favourite, carrying £.1,087, and Merry Peel, £628 10/-, and Silver Ring. £353 10/-, were next in favour. Cadland was ridden by L. G. Morris an 1 belongs to T. A. Duncan. The stipendiary stewards held an inquiry into alleged interference by Cadland with Arrow Lad towards the finish and decided to take no action. CUP MEETING. HOPELESS CRIPPLE. NEARLY DESTROYED. CAREER OF FAST PASSAGE. (Special to “Northern Advocate.’’) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. It would be difficult to imagine a j more romantic tale than is involved in the history of Fast Passage, who scored such an easy win in the New Zealand Cup on Saturday. Fast Passage was bred by the late Sir George Clifford at his Stoneyhurst stud. She was not trained for early racing, and had her first outing early in her thrce-ycar-old season, being unplaced twice. At the Grand National meeting last, year, she developed lameness, which became very apparent, after each fast gallop. In the Oaks, when she ran second to Korokio, she • was completely knocked out, and was got home only Avith difficulty. She appeared at. this time a hopeless cripple, with no prospect, of recovery. A veterinary consultation Avas hold, lint the experts disagreed. Sir Charles Clifford, visiting the stable a few days later, said lie did not Avant. to see the filly in pain, and ordered her destruction. Albert Cutts and Air J. Stafford formed a theory, and begged that their idea might, he given a trial. . Blood tests disclosed a. parasitic. Infection, hut, under treatment by injection, the (illy began lo improve. She Avout to Auckland at Faster, but. looked to have broken down Avhen she . Avas pulled up in the Oaks about half a mile from home. Since May, when . she had another trial, she has done ' everything right, and has won at Ashburton, Dunedin, Ricearton and Clinton, and has slioavu no trace of unsoundness. Her recovery, Avhich gives every appearance of being permanent, is a tribute to the veterinary skill and care she gets in her stable. One of the happiest of those aa'lio watched her Aviu ou Saturday Avas Mr .1. Stafford. AUCKLAND RACES DEAD HEAT IN STAKES. BIG SURPRISE IN PLYING.
