The nood for absorbing unemployed i ( n productive work, such as development of the gold-mining industry, irrigation of Central Otago, and drainage work in the North Island, was emphasised by Mr W. A. Bodkin (Government, Central Otago' in the House of Representatives yesterday.
As far as gold-mining was concerned, he considered valuable results would be obtained by spending money on the purchase of plant- to enable the unemployed to adopt more up-to-date methods. Money could be provided by the issue of Treasury bonds, say, ,£(>,000,000 a year, and this, supplemented by £4,000,000 a year collected by the Unemployment Board, should be sullicient to keep men on productive works.
