COMMUNISM

STEPS FOR SUPPRESSION

SYDNEY, October 18

' The Commonwealth Government is taking definite steps to suppress Communism. Action is being taken against certain printers and publishers of newspapers which solicit subscriptions for unlawful associations, and consideration is being given to the question of dealing with lessees and owners of buildings who permit meetings of unlawful associations on their premises. Publications in foreign languages are being more strictly supervised. Permission to publish has been refused in the case of a Greek and two Italian newspapers, and in the ease of a Perth publication, “La Stampa Italiana,” the deportation of the publisher has been approved. Importation into the Commonwealth is now prohibited of any literature which advocates the overthrow of Governments or the law by force, the abolition of organised government, the assassination of public officials, and the unlawful destruction of property.

Under the amendment to the Immigration Act the Government has greater powers to deport undesirables, and, in general, the Immigration laws are being administered to exclude persons who are likely to become engaged in seditious activities.

While a shipment of timber from Norway was being handled at the timber yards of Messrs. Thatcher and Oberg, Ltd., yesterday, a Red leaflet containing insidious Communist propaganda was found concealed in one of the ties. It was In Norwegian.
