DULL, WET DAYS
FLOODS RECEDING
REMARKABLE RAINFALL,
(Per Press Association.—Copyright.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day,
After five'days of continuous rain all over Canterbury, the weather clbared yesterday.
Shortly before noon the sun broke through- the heavy clouds for the first time after an unusually long period of dull, wet days. After a temporary return to dull conditions the weather became warm and .sunny again in the early afternoon and remained so until the evening, when heavy, threatening clouds gathered from the north-east. It is reported from the eountiy districts that rain has ceased, and that flood waters in rivers and low-lying areas of land are receding.
The rainfall has been the heaviest in October since 1909, a. remarkable position when it is remembered that half-way through this month, indications were that it would bo one of the driest Octobers on record. A total of 0.17 indies of rain was recorded in October, 1909, and for the present month nearly five inches has fallen. Since the rain started on October 22, up to yesterday morning, the rain totalled 3.55 inches.
