PROBATION FOR TWO MEN, Spec ini to *'Northern A<lvocn to.”) AUCKLAND, Thursday. ■ Two young men—Arthur Purvis Smith and Paul Callaghan—who yes terday pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawfully converting a motor car to their own use, appeared for sentence in the Police Court this morning. The probation officer reported upon both accused and recommended that they be admitted to probation. .“As their offence was no more than a foolish prank under the influence of liquor, they should be given probation/ ’ said Mr Ackins, who represented both accused. “They have spent two nights in custody and have received a severe lesson.’ ’ Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M., admitted Smith and Callaghan to probation for 12 months, and ordered them to pay expenses amounting to .12/10 each.
