NORTHLAND CRICKET
HIGHER STATUS SOUGHT. AFFILIATION WITH N.Z. COUNCIL. HAWKE CUP MATCHES. All sub-associations were represented at the annual meeting of the Northland Cricket Association, held in Whangarei last night. The president, Mr H. Flewellyn, presided. The annual report showed that last season only one Dargaville Shield match was played, Rodney successfully defending the trophy against Whangarei. For Country Week in Auckland, teams representing Northland and Rodney were fielded. It was a matter for regret that South Auckland had to cancel their northern tour. The annual match with Auckland had to bo abandoned after the first day owing to rain. The balance sheet showed a most satisfactory position, with a credit balance of £lO 18/10. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr A. J. Murdoch, ALP.; president, Air H. H. Flewellyn; vice-presi-dents, all presidents of affiliated subassociations; secretary and treasurer, Air C. L. Rowe; auditor, Air G. H. Hedditch; sole selector, Air G. H. Grant. There was a lengthy discussion on the question of selectorship. The Mangonui delegates were strongly in favour of a committee. Others pointed out that the experience. of last season showed that a ■committee of three was not workable, and the appointment of a sole selectorwas eventually decided upon. The captain and manager of all representative teams ■will in future be appointed by the association. Affiliation. The chairman asked delegates to decide whether Northland should affiliate with the Auckland Cricket Association or direct with the New Zealand Cricket Council, thus atttaining the status of a minor province, and the right to challenge for the Hawke Cup at present held by South Auckland. A change, he said, would not necessarily interfere with the cordial relations existing between Northland and Auckland. It was unanimously decided to link up direct with the New Zealand Cricket Council. The secretary was instructed to write to the Auckland Association asking for their support in the matter. General. The remit from the Rodney Association that teams not challenging for the Dargaville Shield be not included in the draw, was withdrawn. Application was made by the Rodney Assoeiatiaon for permission to compete in the Auckland. Cricket Association's Country "Week tournament as a separate team. ■ Considerable discussion ensued on this question and it was eventually decided that Northland be represented by A and B teams in the e-ompetition. It was stated that there was every prospect of a visit, from South Auckland and Auckland suburban representative teams during the summer.
