PROTEST AGAINST ABOLITION

A. meeting of representatives of local bodies and motoring organisations, called by the Canterbury Progress League, was held yesterday to consider the proposal of the National Expenditure Commission that the Highways Fund should be abolished. A resolution was carried to the effect that the conference, while fully appreciating the financial difficulties of the Government, disagreed absolutely with the commission’s recommendation that the Highways Fund be abolished, and urged that the fund be maintained, and that at the earliest possible day all special motor taxation be paid into the fund.
