OBITUARY
MR WILLIAM GARTON. BORN IN THE NORTH. The death occurred at his residence, 81, Kamo Road, yesterday, of Mr William Garton. aged 71 years. Deceased was a son of one of the founders of Mangonui, and belonged to a. family which is. highly "esteemed in the Far North. He spent the greater part of a useful life sheep-faming at Hihi, a little settlement across the harbour from the township' of Mangoimi. Six years ago Mr and Mrs Garton retired to Whangarei, leaving the management of the 5000-acre run to four of their sons. Another son, Alex., is farming at Kara, and there arc also three married daughters, Mr Garton was a devout member of the Plymouth Brethren, and applied true Christian principles in his dealings with outsiders and in his own home life. The sympathy of all will be extended to the widow and family in their loss. Mr Jack Garton, of Omni, the wellknown land vainer, is a brother. The funeral will take place at Oruaiti tomorrow' afternoon. MR. J, E. D. SPICER. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This Day. The dentil occurred suddenly at his residence in Oliver Street, Remuera, Auckland, yesterday of ,Mr John EdAvard Diggle Spicer, aged 73 years. Mr Spicer w r as born in Auckland and Avas the third son of the late Mr A. 11, Spicer. He spent most of his life in New Zealand and Australia, - . He entered the . GoA'ermncnt service as a clerk in the Railway Department at the age .of 19. He also serA'ed in the Native Department and the Lands and Deeds' Department, and then as accountant in the Agricultural Department, Auckland. He retired about nine years ago and had' since carried on business as auditor and public accountant. Mr Spicer was a descendant of an old missionary family. His grandfather, Mr James Preeee, was sent to Now Zealand in .1830 by the Church of England Missionary Society. His grandmother, Miss -Mary Ann Williams, came to New r Zealand with the Rev. Samuel Marsden’s missionary party. His mother w T as said to he the first English girl born south of the Bay of Islands, being born at Puriri in ,1834. Mr Spicer married' Miss Adams, the only daughter of the late Mr C. M. Adams, Chief Surveyor and Commissioner of CroAvn Lands for Dunedin and Marlborough. He is survived by Mrs Spicer, who is Avell known as an artist; one, daughter, Miss Peggy Spicer, and two sons, Messrs King and St. John Spicer.
