MIDLAND SCHOOLS

COMBINED ,SPOUTS,

TANGITERORIA FUNCTION. SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. All roads for school children within a radius of miles from Maungatapere led to Tangiteroria yesterday. From early morning they began to arrive in lorries, motor cars, and by other means of transport, and when the second annual sports conducted by the Northern Midland Districts Primary Schools Sports Association were timed to start, between 300 and 400 children, to say nothing of parents, packed the showgrounds.

Children from eleven schools were represented at the gathering, and, when not competing, cheered their mates along, until, at times, the noise would have done credit to the most exciting of football contests. Even the rain, Avhich came in occasional showers, did not dampen their ardour, and they enjoyed their day’s outing to the full.

The programme was a- lengthy one, but was not lacking for competitors. Big Helds faced the starter in every event, and in some, such as the halfmile, there were over 3ft contestants. Each school was represented in practically every event, both girls and boys.

Two cups presented under the Herbert Smith Trust, and a shield, donated by the Maungatapere Athletic Club, were competed for. One cup was for competition among the boys, and the other among the girls, and was Avon by the school "with the highest aggregate in each’ section. Parakao Avon the girls’ enp and Pakotai the boys’, Avhilc the former Avere successful in lifting the shield, which was for the highest total in both sections. Tho placings■are yet subject to confirmation, but it is unlikely that the position aaull be changed.

The association has only been functioning for a short period, but the success Avhich has met both earniA’als held under its auspices, has been more than gratifying. It consists of a representative from each school, Avith a representative of each school committee, presided OA’cr by Mr H. C. Fraser.

Much, and indeed most, of the credit for the outstanding success of yesterday’s gathering must go to the organising secretary, Mr K. Hayr. He

did a tremendous amount of work, not only in draAvlng up the programme, but' in suporA’ising its smooth running. . The proceedings Avcnt Avithout a hitch, thanks to the untiring work of the committeemen, and the function must be voted one of the most successful sports gatherings of its kind CA'er held in North Auckland.

Yesterday’s sports did not finish tho association’s programme for this year, and the Avinter gathering will be hold some time in August. Then the day avi’ll not be devoted to athletics, but to contests in football, hockey and other games.
