OBITUARY

MR NATHAN SEDDON. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) STRATFORD, This Day. The death lias occurred of Mi Nathan Seddou, aged 59, a well-known oliieer of the Public Works Depart munt, in which lie held- office as iu spector. He was a nephew of the late Hon R. J. ’Seddou, former Premier of New Zealand. Mr Seddou leaves a widow and daughter (Miss Seddou of Stratford,) and a son, Mr R. N. Seddou of Wellington. MR ISAAC COATES. Hr Isaac Coates, formerly a well- { knowui public figure in the Waikato, died on May 1 at his home, Pukenui Road, Epsom, aged 93. He w r as bom at New Richmond, Yorkshire, and was brought up to farming. He arrived at Lyttelton in the Lancashire Witch in 18(57, and the next yeai 1 came on to Auckland. He bought land near Hamilton, and w T as one of the first councillors of the borough being mayor for the five consecutive years ending 1892. He also sat on the Waikato County Council, the hos pital board, and for three years w'as chairman of the Kirikiri Road Board. .Mrs Coates, who was a daughter o’f the late Air P. Coleman, of Kirikiriroa, died a week ago. The following children are loft: Mrs ,T. A. GHlett, of Piikonnl Road, Epsom; Airs N. C. Kensington, of Dunedin; Airs R. C. Hebbon, of Pnkiatua; Airs £. T. Hughes, of Papakura; and three sons, .Messrs H. A. Coates, of Rotorua, and A, H. Coates and H. F. Coates, of Alelbourue. There are 2(5 grand children. AIR .STEPHEN EVA. On Saturday, at Ncw r Plymouth, the death occurred of Air Stephen Eva, aged 87, believed to be the last surviving civilian in Taranaki w'ho took part in the Alaori wars of 1800 (51. Air Eva was bom in Taranaki, and hi .18(50 became attached to the Imperial forces at the siege of the great Alaori stronghold in Pukerangiora, ou the banks of the Waltara River. On the second outbreak of hostilities in 18(53 Air Eva joined a volunteer bush man's party under Alajor Atkinson. He was one of a small party which escaped when ambushed on Franklcy Road, in February, .18(5-1-,. Mr Eva was also present at a skirmish at Kaitaki, ou Alarch 11, .18(54, and was one of the party of bushmen who rushed to the rescue of the 57th Regiment that had been caught with heavy losses at Aim Aim. He took part with a company' under Captain .Tones ; at the capture of enemy' strongholds at Manutalii, Mataitawa and Tearei At the conclusion of the war Mr Eva took up a bush settlement, and afterwards lived in and about New Plymouth. Ho is survived by three sons, Messrs .1. and P. Eva, of New Plymouth, and Air N. G. Eva, of. Wanganui. j MR G. .1. HAWKESBY. i The death occurred on Sunday' of Mr George Jackson Ha wkesby, of Mt. Eden, Auckland, a well-known official of the Lands and Survey' Department. Bom in Colchester, England, tit years ago, .Mr ‘Hawkesby' was the eldest son of the late Captain G. W. Ha wkesby, of HuRoyal Irish Regiment, and was educated at Tate School, Wexford, Ireland. As a young man he joined his fa I her'? ngiment, in wliieli lie served for a number of years, including ten years ia India. Coming to New Zealand about 27 years ago, Mr Hawkesby became a member of (ho Clerical stall* of the Auckland Bands and Survey- Departmenl. With the exception of several years of active service during the War, he remained with the department in Auckland until his death. .Mr Hawkesby is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
