FIRE RAVAGE

COTTAGE A TOTAL LOSS. OCCUPANTS ESCAPE NARROWLY (Special to ".Northern Advocate.”) WELLINGTON, This Day. A cottage occupied by Mr and Mrs Shaw and child, situated on the southern slope of Point Howard, was destroyed by fire at 4 a.in. yesterday. The cause of the tire is unknown. Mr and Mrs Shaw escaped in their night attire, and, as the fire prevented exit by the door, Mr Shaw had to lower his wife and child some 1-) feet from the window on the southern side to tin; tloor of the basement of the house. Only the fierce wind and rain prevented the fire spreading to unoccupied houses on the other side of tlie narrow right-of-way. Had not the rain quenched the sparks, nothing could have saved the other homes in the district, which had no water supply.
