Short Runs.
. Jack Newman, Hampshire professional cricketer, whose work' over a period of years was reflected in Canterbury’s successes in the last two seasons, had a fine compliment paid him in South Africa recently. Newman strained his heart there last year and was unable to play in England in the season just passed. The South Africans have re-engaged Newman as coach, his task being merely oral instruction without having to do any batting or bowling. Neil Dorreen, who played himself into Canterbury’s Plunket Shield team on the sheer merit of his wicket-keep-ing, has made an auspicious debut in Hawke’s Bay, where lie is row farming. He is captaining Tech, 0.8. Club and inlns first engagement cf the soaand in his first engagement of the season ho stumped two men and caught three in the first innings and in the second stumped one. One extra, only was recorded in each innings. Dorreen may also prove his worth to Hawke’s Bay as a footballer. Ho was messed about too much'in the Morivale team to allow' him’to.show his best form in the last couple of seasons.
