With only seven returns to come, which will not be available until tomorrow, the state of the parties is:— Government. Conservatives 471 National Liberal 63 National Labour 14 Independents 3 551 Opposition. Labour 48 Liberal 7 Others 2 57 VIEW OF-MR. WELLS. PENDULUM MAY SWING BACK.^ (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 28. Mr. H. G. Wells, the British historian and novelist, views the national victory as a simple mandate to call in the doctors rather than a triumph for Conservatism. “This is not a Conservative victory,” he said. “It is the Conservative Party’s victory, if you like, but do distinguish between the two. “Should the Nationalists fail to restore prosperity, I foresee a swing towards Communism and Radicalism, and I forecast that in this event Labour might come back to power as a Socialistic or even a Communistic group.” Discussing the Mahatma Gandhi, Mr. Wells said: “I have no use for him nor his loin cloth, nor his mental obliviousness to dentistry,”

OF EMPIRE MOMENT. DOMINIONS’ ATTITUDE. (Received 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Sydney “Morning Herald,’’ in a leader on the election, says the results will probably be as momentous throughout the Empire as in Britain. “Indeed,’’ says the paper, “it is the likely response from the Dominions as much as anything which may recommend an effective preferential tariff to the new Government. “Nor is that all. In Australia and New Zealand, at any rate, a definite declaration of the British people for strict administrative economy reinforces up to the hilt the advice giveJ these Dominions by the financial experts invited hither from the Old Country, ’ ’

STATE OF PARTIES. The strength of parties in the House of Commons at the time of the formation of the National Government and their strength in 1929 are shown in the following table: — 1931 1929 Labour 280 287 Conservative 262 260 Liberal 55 59 Independent 18 9 Totals 615 615
