A good crowd assembled at Rugby Park on Saturday to witness the Rugby clash between Auckland and North Auckland. It was clearly demonstrated last year, when these teams met, that the metropolitan union would need to send its beet possible teatn to have a iiopc of comparing favourably with the sister union of the North, and this fact was convincingly shown in a forcible manner on Saturday, wken North Auckland decisively defeated the city team by 22 points to 8, as compared with the margin of 22 points to 11 of last year. Both teams depended on the forwards to carry the brunt of play, concerted back movements being almost entirely conspicuous by their absence. On several occasions there were flashes pf excellent individual back efforts, but these were not backed up by team

work, and no single score was obtained by either side from an organised con- * certeil back attack. Collins was very prominent for the home side, as also was Mourin. Wells was a star, and Kerr made no mistakes as rearguard. The latter's line finding was superb, and judging from his goal kicking when the ball was given to him, at least another nine points would have been scored by the North had he been allotted the several comparatively easy chances that were wasted early in

the game. Yates, Sherriff, Rika and Morresey were always hard in the tight and the open, and Wilkinson was prominent in the loose. McDonald was jnfinitely superior to the Auckland half, and repeatedly set his hacks in action, only to have what promised to be a good movement almost invariably spoiled by a dropped pass, a man out of position or perhaps a knoek-on. Mcßae, at centre, was a weak link,

leading critics to wonder what Avas the justification for his inclusion. Barich was good AA'hile he lasted, but Feely Avas only fair. Mullins, who replaced Barich, played a fair AA'ing game after he took the field. Of the Auckland team Hazelwood Avas outstanding. Millikin, Davies and Haslam Avere next in prominence. Of a very even lot of forwards, Satherley, Stone and Stacy were most often in evidence. Souler played Avell until his retirement. The Teams. The teams Avere as follow: Auckland.—Davies; Milliken, HazelAvood, Hutchinson; Haslan, Macindoe, Frankham; Stacy; Souter, HayAA-ard; Wishart, Anderson, Satherley; Barker, Batty. Emergencies: Stuart, Stone.

North Auckland. —Kerr; Barich, McRae, Feely; Mourin, Collins, McDonald; Wells; Morrisey, Wilkinson, Yates, Rika, Nathan, Sheriff, Finlayson, F.mergcncies: Mullins, Britland, Robinson, SteAvart. The Play. Auckland kicked off, but too much weight behind the boot sent the leather out, and a serum back Avas ordered. North brought the leather to Avithin a feAV feet of the Auckland goal, only to have Davies clear to the 25. From the line-out here, Hayward was caught offside and Yates missed a penalty shot that was not very hard. Nathan

followed up last, ami spoiled Davies'

effort to clear, making an opportunity for some solid rucking, in which Stacy was caught off-side. Moressey missed a very easy shot at goal, and Hutchinson found the line fully 75 yeards up. From the line-out here, Collins was detected off-side and Hazelwood had an unsuccessful shot at the har, Kerr lelieving to 3(1 yards upheld. Auckland instituted an attack, and, snapping up the leather, which Sherriff had fumbled, Hazelwood went through half the team before he was dropped by Barich only a yard short. Kerr gathered up, and found the line well up. From hero North broke through, and in a melee Souter was injured and had to leave the held, being replaced by Stone. North was given a penalty at this juncture, and Nathan, who was trusted with the ball, essayed a drop-kick at the bar, with an almost ludicrous result. Bucking under the Auckland goal ensued, and Hayward being found off-side Kerr took a shot, and had no difficulty in landing the opening score.

North Auckland 3, Auckland 0,

The next incident was a fine run by Wells, who cut out three men before transferring to Coffins. The latter did his share, and passed to Feely, who had only the full-back to pass. Instead of trying to side-step, Feely barged straight into Davies, and was grassed with only throe feet to go. Heavy rucking gave Mourin a chance to open for McDonald, who, however had run round off-side The penalty kick, which cleaied to past half-way, spoilt a great scoring chance. Blues came through again, but a penalty against Wells gave Auckland another chance to clear to half-way. From here Wells dashed away again, and made a beautiful opening, which was spoiled by Mcßae hanging on too long. A blue back I dash came to nought through McDonald taking a reverse pass off-side. The northern forwards broke away from some solid rucking six yards out, Yates “sold a dummy," and then turned and buffocked his way over. Rika made an astonishing goal kick, the leather soaring to level wdth the top of the fifty odd feet posts but being a few feet off direction.

North 6, Auckland 0,

From the kick-off, North fame through again, to be relieved by a long line kick by Batty. From here another line kick by Davies took the leather to 10 yards from Auckland objective, and from the line-out the forwards broke through, Stone scoring near the corner, Davies failed with the kick.

North 6, Auckland 3

From the half-way kick, Auckland broke away, and Hazelwood, successfully dummying one man and sidestopping another, made a beautiful opening for Hutchinson to cross unopposed. The latter fumbled his pass, however, and allowed Kerr to prevent what should have been a certain try. The blues now attacked strongly, and Wells, who was playing fine football, opened out a beauty for Collins, who ran and short punted, followed up, caught on the bounce, and bolted for the line. A nice try. Kerr added the trimmings. North 11, Auckland 3. The half-way kick was brought back and scrummed, giving McDonald a chance to snap the oval out to Collins, who transferred to Barich, The latter broke away and kicked when confronted by opposition, racing to touch down, accompanied by Sherriff. Miliken beat them to it by a split second on the whistle for half-time. On resumption, play was evenly divided round about half-way for a while, until blues came through again, Wells and Morresey working tigerishly, and succeeding in getting the leather across the line, for Miliken to again get his hand on it first. Play returned to half-way, when Wishart broke through with a battling rush, and passed to Satherley to score. Hazelwood added the major points. North 11, Auckland 8, In some hard play Barach got hurt, and was replaced by Mullins. Blue backs went away, Collins and Mullins making up a lot of ground. From a scramble, Hazelwood was penalised for obstructing Mcßae, and Kerr sent a fine penalty kick over the rail. North 14, Auckland S.

Playing in midfield, Hazelwood sent a fine kick into touch five yards from the score line, only to have the northerners return the leather to halfway from the line-out. Anderson being off-side here, gave Rika a chance to find the line half-a-dozen yards from the objective. With the blue forwards rucking Avell, a Avondcrful chance to score was spoiled by Nathan getting off-side, HazelAVOod clearing to half-Avay. A penalty allowed HazelAvood to find the line about 15 yards out, and another penalty almost immediately gave the same player an opportunity to score, Avhich failed, the ball sailing a little Avide. Still in North's territory, several line-outs finalised in Nathan being caught offside between his oAvn posts and Davies missing the easiest of chances.

Haslam Avcnt off injured at this juncture, and Avas replaced by Stuart. Blues adopted a series of short line kicks to gain territory until, within striking distance, McDonald shot the ball to Feely, avlio made a fine opening, but sent the ball too high Avhen passing to Collins, breaking down another certainty. Two scrums five yards out gave Wells a chance to dive for the line. He fell a feAV feet short, and was penalised for holding on.

Blues came back again from the lineout, and Mourin displaced two men by a pretty cut-in before passing to Collins, who was grassed when almost over. From a serum five yards out, Yates tore through, and grounded alongside the post. Kerr again added Ids tally. North 19, Auckland S. In a blue forward attack Sheriff opened to Rika to Nathan, who short jointed for the line. Wilkinson, following up, brightly snapped up the leather, and carried it the last few feet, to score in the corner. Kerr made a good attempt to goal from an awkward angle, hut w; ; s not successful. North 22, Auckland S. During the last two minutes, blues attacked consistently, but without consummating their efforts. Mr D. McLeod gave an excellent display with the whistle, holding the; game under perfect control throughout. AFTER THE MATCH. TEAMS AT DINNER. On Saturday evening members of the North Auckland and Auckland Rugby representative teams were tendered a dinner at the Commercial Hotel by the North Auckland Rugby Union, whose president, Mr .1. N. McCarroll, occupied the chair, while associated with him at the head of the table wore Messrs J. Potter, Manager of the Auckland team, C. F. Collins, S. Weston, H. F. G. Smith, W. C. Coote and D. McLeod. Three toasts, “The King," proposed by the chairman; “The Auckland Team," proposed by Mr Collins, and replied to by Mr Potter; and “The Host and Hostess," proposed by Mr Potter, were honoured. THIRD GRADE REPS. WHANG ARE! BEAT RAWENE. The Whangarei third grade representatives beat the Rawene third graders by 12 points to nil in a curtainraiser to th'b North Auckland-Auckland representative game at Rugby Park on Saturday, Rawene looked considerably lighter than the Whangarei team, but they proved to be an energetic combination and the result was a very even game, ■with numerous bright interludes.

Rawene were nearly over on several occasions but the Whangarei defence was good. The forwards were hardworking and, with Joass outstanding, were continually on the offensive. The backs indulged in several good movements. Williams played a good game being responsible for many effective attacks. The teams were as follows: —

Whangarei. —Beasley, Ross, Pitman, Bevington, D. Ross, Williams, Sterling, Knew, MeMasters, Gunn, M.. Robinson, Fisher, Robinson, Joass, Hollows, Rawene. —Lowe, L. Whitefield, M. Boyd, Spender, Bonford, Beasley, Gundry, A. Whitefield, Harding, S. Whitefield, Young, Ingram, Cochran, Hargreave, N. Boyd. From the kick-off Whangarei pressed upheld, but Rawene held them back and Bonford cleared effectively. After a spell of mid-field play, the Whangarci backs went away, but Williams gave a forward pass. Rawene snapped up the ball and Beasley shot it out to L. Whitefield, who found the line. Though Whangarei were considerably the heavier team, Rawene were holding them, and several times showing great dash, were on the line. Once Whangarei were very dangerous,' but Spender cleared well. Rawene pressed through and held a good chance of scoring, but a knock-on upset calculations. Betisley was called upon to clear again as the Rawene forwards were attacking. Whangarei worked back to the line and Williams cut in, but Ross could not hold the ball and a try was lost. After a further spell of even play, in which both sides made dangerous thrusts, Whangarei pressed to the line and the hall came out to Bevington, who got over as he was collared. The kick failed.

A little later the same player dodged several men, short-kicked, and following up fell on the ball to score again. Whangarei were asserting themselves and, with Joass in the lead, a few minutes later were on the fine again, Robinson scoring. Shortly after half-time Whangarei scored once more, Pitman being responsible, but the kick at goal was disallowed.

RaAvene threatened Whangairei’s line and L. Whitofield was nearly over, but there AA r as a serum on the line and Beasley cleared well. In the final ten minutes of the game there was some sensational Avork, both sides playing up brightly. Once RaAvene broke through and nearly scored, but in a race for the ball Whangarci forced. There was no further score when time was called.
