FALSE PRETENCES
PASS-OUT CHECK SOLD. OFFENDER CONVICTED. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) AUCKLAND, Friday. A young amateur wrestler, G, R. Groom, appeared on summons in the Police Court this morning and admitted two charges of false pretencnes. He was convicted and ordered to pay £2 8/ costs. The charges were that- on two occasions he obtained 2/6 by falsely representing that a “pass-out check' ’ to a wrestling match was good and valid.
Detective Sergeant Kelly, who prosecuted, said defendant was an amateur wrestler and, as such, had a pass entitling him to gain admittance to a wrestling match free. One evening after entering the hall he went oul again, receiving a “pass-out check.’’ He met a young man in Grey Avenue and sold himHhe check for 2/0. Another man wanted to krnow if defendant could get a check for him. Groom went inside again but could not get another cheek. In the meantime the first young man found that he could not get in with the pass defendant had sold to him. Groom was given seven days in which to pay the costk.
