BLAZING BACH, OLD MAN TRAPPED. (Per Press Association.—Oopyrlgn*.) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. Wm. Carlilo Graham, aged 78, met his death when the bach he occupied at North Brighton was destroyed by fire this morning. There were indications that the deceased had endeavoured to get out of his bedroom, but had been overcome by smoke. At the inquest a verdict was returned that death was due to bums. An accident resulting in the loss of his leg befell Mr Percival F. H*. Chambers, aged 38, stationmaster at Runanga, a married man with four children. When changing tablets for a mixed train proceeding from Dunbllie to Greymouth yesterday, Mr Chambers slipped over the edge of the Runanga station platform, the wheels of a carriage passing over his leg. He was removed in a serious condition to the Greymouth hospital, where his leg was amputated. His condition remains serious. CAR STRIKES COW. VEHICLE DAMAGED. (Per Pres* Association.—Copyright.} PUKEKOHE, Sunday. ‘ A collision between a motor car and a cow straying on the road occurred at a bend on the Razorback, Great South Road, last evening. The car was driven by the Rev. Poihipi, who was proceeding from Te Kauwhata to Clevedon. The radiator and mudguards of the car were damaged, and it had to be towed to Pukekohe for repairs. Extensive damage to a tramcar and a motor lorry was occasioned as the result of a collision at the intersection of Powderham and Morley Streets, on Saturday. The passengers in the tramcar and the driver of the lorry escaped unhurt, but the motorman, Mr R, Warburton, received cuts to his face through flying glass. The impact was so severe that the tram was derailed. CHILD’S CRUEL FATE. MOTHER’S EVIDENCE. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, This Day. At the inquest, held before Mr W. H. Lucas, Coroner, into the death of Mary Wickliffe, aged seven, the child’s mother stated that she and her family of five lived at a Maori settlement at TVeroa. On May 8, she lit a fire in the front room to warm the children. She went out to obtain more wood ~and rushed back when she heard the children screaming. When Mr Benjamin Studley, aged 76, of the Auckland Infirmary, was walking across Manukau Road, near the corner of King George Avenue, on Saturday evening, he was knocked down by a motor car travelling towards Auckland, Mr Studley was taken to the Auckland Hospital, where it was found that he had received injuries to the head and a fracture of the left leg below the knee. His condition at a late hour last evening was considered to be serious.
