COMPETITIONS COMMENCE

lifsuits iii flip first series of matches controlled by the Whangarei Basketboll Association on Thursday arc as folio ws:—■ Boarders A 21, Lodge A 7. Boarders B 18, Lo,dge B 11. Whangarei Guides 4, Bargain Store 3. Boarders A v. Lodge A. On the High School court, Boarders A secured a decisive win over Lodge A. The combination and quick passing of the school girls proved too much for the Lodge players, who resorted to long throws. These seldom gained any advantage, as the opposing players .core able to jump in and secure the ball to start another quick passing rush. The defenders in the Lodge team ilid well, saving their side on many occasions, and in the Boarders’ team all the players worked together in such excellent passing and combination that nearly every member of the team handled the ball as it passed from one •ml to the other. Boarders E v. Lodge B. The second match' on the High school court was very keenly contestid, although not as spectacular as tho irst. Many of the Lodge team had dayed very little before, but they showed promise of becoming'good playirs with practice and combination. The mmparatively small school girls did excellently to gain a victory over their taller, opponents.

Whangarei Guides v. Bargain Store. This match, played on the Whangarei School courts, was characterised by very low scoring. Play during the first half was not of a very high order, the scores at half-time being one all. In the second half, however, both teams played much better, but although they secured an almost equal share of the ball the players wore shooting very poorly, missing many easy chances. A very evenly contested game resulted in a win for the guides, 4—3. Bargain (Store wqjfo' unlucky in losing one of their best play;ers through an injury' to her ankle.
