HOTEL BURNED DOWN
RELIC OF OLDEN DAYS.

Fire last evening destroyed the Hilltop Hotel, an old landmark on Banks Peninsula, standing on the heights above Akarog Harbour. Virtually nothing w r as saved. The building was a double-storey structure of wood, built in 1880, and was a popular stopping-place in the old coaching days. It was owned by Mr H. J. Bell, of Christchurch, and was insured for £9OO. Mr M. Pitty, the licensee, is a heavy loser. The Government telephone bureau was also destroyed.
