MAUNGATAPERE SPORTS
The success which attended the Manngatapere athletic sports meeting on Easter Monday has more than one lesson which should not be disregarded by the people of the Dominion. It gives ns very sincere pleasure to add our congratulations to those which have been extended so freely to the Manngatapere Athletic’Club. The meeting was a record success in every way. The support extended by athletes —irunners, cyclists and axemen-—* was most gratifying, and the conduct of the meeting was all that could be desired. The chief lesson of the success of the meeting, however, lies in the fact that the officials of the club worked for a record success. They evidently believe that if success in any sphere of life is to be achieved, it must be envisaged by those who want (to achieve it. There is, unfortunately, too much ground for belief that the Dominion is experiencing a period of depression, but the. officials of the Manngatapere Athletic Sports Club deliberately set onit to counteract the depression by setting to work as though it did not exist. They increased their prize-money and added new attractions to their already attractive programme, and they did everything they possibly could to ensure a record attendance of the public. Right well did they succeed. With the Waiotira A, and P. Society, which set a wonderfully fine example in the same direction, the Manngatapere Athletic Sports Club has provided a tonic for all who attended its meeting. Both associations have proved that the best way to get through a difficult period is to redouble efforts. Had either of- them gripped the nettle lightly it would have stung them for their pains. But, going forward boldly, and making the most of existing circumstances, they achieved the goal to which they set their faces.
