STANDARD OF LIVING
“AY AGES AIT’ST COME DOWN,” RECIPROCAE TARIFF. I (Received 12. Tl p.m.) j LONDON, April .1. A hint flint 111 e Economic Advisory Co urn-11 had advised the Government to impose a tariff was given by the first Lord of the Admiralty, Mr A. A . Alexander, while addressing the Co-opera-tive Conference at Blackpool. s Alluding to Australia as an instance of the incapacity of protectionist countries to protect the workers, -Mi Alexander said that,' slimming up the fiscal issue and taking into account the Economic Council’s advice, his view was that the people could not maintain the present standard of living. Wages must come down, if the public dared not face the'industrial, consequences of such a policy, it could do it by applying a tariff on the goods the workers consumed. In a subsequent interviw, Mr Alexander denied his intention to convey the idea, that the council had presented reports. He was merely quoting a widespread feeling among economists and industrialists. “Reynolds’ Illustrated News,” however, states that the Government has received and rejected the advice of the council to impose a tariff.
