PARNELL v. NORTHLAND
VISITORS DECISIVELY BEATEN,
On Saturday, at the Hikurnngi LV (creation Pari;, a match was played between the Panic] League Club's senior team and a. learn selected at short notice from Northland, The city team, which was strengthened up by the inclusion of Shortland and Perry, met with a. decisive defeat at the bauds of the Northlanders, the Anal [scores reading: 25—12, The game was iline expositou of the League code, the passing and handling of both sides surpassing anything seen, at Hikunuigi during the whole season, Ar. almost total absence of the litre kicking, which so slows up football, was very noticeable, the players depending on passing bouts for the gaining of ground. This livened up the play enormously and made for a spectacular game such as has not boon enjoyed for a long time. The teams were as follow;
Parnell. —Kerr, full-back; Menus, Perry, Andrews, three-quarters; O’Donnell, 'Short-land, five-eighths; Alderton, half; Currie, Ray, Maher, front row; Ivorsen, McLaren, side, row; Ritchie, breakaway.
Northland. —C. Hamilton, full-back; E. Cunningham, R. Hamilton, S. Hayward, three-quarters; 'Crackett, Gatlin, five-eighths; Raisbeck, half; E. O’Callaghan, C. o’Callaghan, Steers, front row; Saunders, W. Hayward, middle row; Dunn, breakaway.
The first score was made within five minutes by Gatlin, who was easily the star player of the game. By fast following up he heat Munns for a drop;ied catch and streaked for the line. C. Hamilton failed with the kick at goal.
The next score was made by R. Hamilton from an .opening by Gatlin, uho passed to Crackett, to E, Cunningham, to the scorer, who crossed in a flash. W, Hayward with a good kick added two more points; Northland 8, Parnell 0.
Very shortly after this a break in front of Northland’s goal gave Maher an easy chance for a penalty goal, which duly landed.
Gatlin again opened up to Hayward to R. Hamilton, who raced down the sideline for another score. Hayward found the angle too difficult. Parnell now made a jgreat effort and from a position near the Northlanders’ line, Ritchie broke through to score near the posts. Kerr added the major points: Northland 11, Parnell 7. Halftime, at this juncture, gave the players a much needed breather.
With a strong breeze ifi their favour, it was anticipated that Parnell would wade in, and pile up a score. This did not prove the case, however, Northland playing better than ever, Hayward opened up to Catlia for a tricky run before passing to E. Cunningham, who crossed in the corner and ran round behind the posts. Gatlin gnaled: Northland 16, Parnell 7. Parnell again pressed and were awarded a penalty two yards in front of Northland’s goal, Maher took the shot and with a, short dummy kick into his own hands completely fooled tlm opposition and dived between the posls. Aldwton converted: Northland Hi, Parnell 12. The next excitement was a solo try by C. O’Callaghan, who 1 grounded near the corner flag. Catlin failed to increase the total with the kick.
After a long struggle, J. Crackett got possession and cleverly zig-zagged through his opponents for a score near the corner. Hayward failed with the hick: Northland 22, Parnell 12.
The last score was made by R. Hamilton, who carried the ball past several opponents, short-punted and used Iris pace to race through, pick up and ground some ten yards from the corner, C. Hamilton failed at goal: Northland 25, Parnell 12. Mr E, Tavlor was referee.
