KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR
INQUEST ON DEO.EAS.IvD. OPEN YE EDICT EETUENED. (Per Press Association.-—Copyright.) WELLINGTON, Tiiis Day. At the inquest on Lucy June Hampton, killed on Lambton Quay by a motor ear in March, evidence teas given by a passenger tliat ho and the driver had each had two drinks. The driver was careful and gave warnings at intersections. Deceased appeared to have stepped back in front of the car. Two ladies, who saw the accident, also said the deceased and a friend I with her appeared to hesitate and step back, and there was nothing to show that the motorist was at fault. The Coroner remarked that these ladies had come forward in consequence of what they saw in the palters and it would have been Trotter if, instead of communicating with inter, ested parties, they had gone to the coroner direct. Then there would be no suggestion that the evidence was not quite disinterested. The verdict was that deceased died ! from injuries as the result of being knocked down by a ear driven by Leo Joseph Smith.
